I have often attacked the fans of OU for being incorrect in their usage of their letters. I ask them to find this storied Oklahoma University only to have them crinkle their brows and stare back at me intensely before throwing out some historic fact of their football domination of my beloved Cowboys. It appears I am not the only person who finds the nickname to be misleading.
From the English Newspaper, The Guardian:
Here's an entertaining passage from Wort's story: “Oklahoma University is traditionally one of the most storied college sides and their set up, from the cavernous changing facilities and trophy room to their 85,000 capacity stadium, are easily the equal of many European professional soccer clubs. But the college has struggled to live up to expectations in recent years and the 2010-11 season ended on a sour note when bitter local rivals, Oklahoma State, comprehensively defeated the Sooners in the traditional end of season ‘Bedlam' derby.”Read more: http://newsok.com/ou-football-notebook-tom-wort-featured-in-english-newspaper/article/3634236#ixzz1hNhBMi1J
Love the part about "comprehensively defeating" the Sooners. Now we, the Orange Faithful, get to celebrate for the next year not only a comprehensive defeat of the Normanites, but also an outright conference title and a Fiesta Bowl victory too.
This season has been one I will never forget and all Cowboys should remember when they begin their stories of OSU's rise to prominence on the college football landscape. Thank you Weeden2Blackmon and Coop and Blatnick, Richetti, the Evil Elf (Colton Chelf), Garner and Adcock and all the others that elevated the program for the past 4 years.
